Ex Machina; Part Two

On the 27th, after extensive planning by the Tower residents and the chipped-collar units, Aria will lead the infiltration team to the administrative levels via a retrieval unit elevator. After a long ride--half an hour at the least, though it's hard to keep track--the elevator opens into a hallway which seems to absorb extraneous light after a certain distance, leaving the way ahead pitch black.

Aria will remain stationed at the elevator and give a final overview of the plan: Riki's computers must be shut down without detection, and Riki must be drawn out of the machine room once the equipment has been shut off. Only after Riki leaves the room can Aria and her workers secure the machine.

With that, she sends the infiltration team along with a chipped-collar unit. Deviation from the path specified on the map would not be an easy task; the darkness of the corridor is all-consuming, and even light sources created by those with real powers can barely illuminate the immediate area. Thankfully the chipped unit seems to know the area well, and will lead the team through until the hallway begins to illuminate again.

The chipped unit will not accompany them any further, but the rest of the trek is a short, straight shot to the machine room, and the administrator working within.

Hopefully the time spent planning will pay off.

Meanwhile, the conditions in the residential levels of the Tower continue to deteriorate. Once the monsters have all vanished from the Tower, a profound exhaustion starts to set into the residents. Their energy continues to drain throughout the week, worsening by the day.

But even sleep doesn't offer any respite from the exhaustion--nightmares plague even the most peaceful of sleepers, assaulting them with abstractions that feel representative of fear itself. Later in the week, these horrors begin to bleed into a character's waking world, manifesting as hallucinations. It may be the feeling of always being watched, or the sensation of something crawling beneath the skin, or a flash every now and then that warps the very walls and floors beneath your feet. Whatever form it takes, it always feels somehow beyond the reach of understanding--uncomprehensible, and terrifying for its obscurity.

There are certain areas that worsen the nightmarish visions and increase the frequency at which they are experienced. Floors sixteen, twenty-six, forty-three, forty-four, fifty-six, and fifty-nine will all exacerbate the condititions of the player characters. The exhaustion worsens on these floors, as well, to the point where it almost seems possible to feel the life draining from your body.

Surely there must be some underlying cause? Because at this rate, it seems likely that you could collapse at any minute...

If the player characters do not determine what is causing them to weaken, they will eventually die of exhaustion, with characters who spend more time on afflicted floors succumbing more quickly to their fatigue. Characters who die as a result of the exhaustion will not be revived until the beginning of May.

Does the social-link power that helps keep the psychelysis phantoms away help at all with the nightmares/hallucinations?

I've noticed all the floors where the effects are worsened, used to affect the monsters in some ways. Could it be that a system that was normally meant to affect the monsters, now affects the residents since there are no monsters left?

If a character is in their bedroom at the time of a glamour glitch, will they notice anything visually unusual about the fluid in the pods they sleep in?

So as I was rambling I sparked a question.

IIRC - during Individuation, the more energy the characters had sucked from them, the lighter their collar colors got. Does the continued weakening during this week produce a similar effect?

If the AI is given a list of the floors that have the most energy sucking effect, would it be able to tell them if there's a correlation or pattern in which floors are affected, locationally or through similar floor effects?

Piggybacking off the confirmation that the fluid in the collars will lighten over the week and any character in a pod at the time of a glamour glitch will see the pod as usual, will the fluid in the pods lighten over the week, too?

Xion and Reno are in the infiltration and are going to be going together. Anybody else interested in helping them out?

Xion's probably going to focus on the terminals themselves given her hacking experience. She will probably try to make some attempts to figure out what Riki is doing, though, since it's in a whole other language, it'll be difficult.

Reno will be extremely focused, and, should they get Riki's attention or the chance to approach him, he will try to ask him what's going on/what he's doing. He won't try to break their stealth, but he doesn't exactly trust Aria.

Ocelot would be interested in helping out.

Infiltration is her forte and she'd probably be able to help keep lookout and such. She's also in the "doesn't entirely trust Aria" camp as well.

Reno's also willing to work out as the distraction for Riki to draw him out of the room, or to cover others while they're working.

Gandalf would probably be interested in assisting. He doesn't distrust Aria or anything, but what he heard about Riki troubled him enough he'd rather use the chance to get information.

'Sides if Riki gets angry, they may need someone with some "You shall not pass" experience.

Yukiko's going to be part of the infiltration squad! I know I've talked to a few people about teaming up, so let's do this.

Feferi and Patchouli are going to be staying upstairs this time around, so if anyone wants to plot stuff. Feferi's pretty likely to poke at the exacerbating floors, but Patchouli's going to fling herself into books to try and figure stuff out.

Well, David and Arturia already met during Riki's power donation drive, and she ought to remember how he used that cloaking device—what do you think about the two of them teaming up?

Enoch, as mentioned, is going to attempt to distract Riki.

So far the predominant plan is to use conversation. Which is either really brilliant or really stupid.

He's got a few people in on it already; anyone's free to tag into any of these threads or respond on their own to plot ICly! Or OOCly here, if you prefer.

Infiltration: Stealth

[personal profile] megazero_to_superhero 2014-04-28 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
David's down there with the Infiltration Team. Given all his superhuman powers are Technology-based and therefore glamoured, he doesn't know if they'll help him in shutting down the terminals, but he has a cloaking device as part of his Devices powerset. He's been banking on this helping with the Infiltration efforts from the start.

Has there been any discussions OOCly on who's going after which terminals? I noticed Zelda has a team going for Terminal 3.

David will prefer to handle any of the terminals not already being worked on by a tech specialist and/or stealth-savvy type.

Minato's going down as well and have decent stealth skills. If worse comes to worse, he'll provide support via his Personas and cover for people if they're working (sup hackers). Fortunately, he already did the collar checkup thing and have his real powers back. unless he died again

Before real life decided to throw a curve ball at me, Diarmuid was talking about trying to get most of the people (those willing anyway) who didn't go down below, up to the hidden floor just in case things went very wrong and Riki turned on everyone once he found out they were trying to mess with his plans. With the exhaustion riddle to solve now, he is probably still going to do that, but more so that people can be together brainstorming what needs to be done to save themselves than for protection. Currently a few people are asking questions above and getting some information, but we still need more ideas!

I would throw up a log for people to work out plotting and ideas in, but because of above said real life stuff, I'm not sure how much time I am going to have to post over the next week. Unless this ends up lasting a while, Diarmuid's involvement is going to have to be handwaved/directed by Waver (and Nao who has god-mod rights over him). Maybe someone else can get a log set up for people at least to be meeting and exchanging ideas up on the hidden floor?

Re: Top-siders Plotting?

[personal profile] neverbeamemory 2014-04-28 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sephiroth is just about over his own few-weeks of lacking energy & flashback/nightmares as a result of last month and his transition into the altered fluid again. However he is starting to get himself back together again with regard to that all-important will to continue to fight the Administrators thanks to a handful of other characters; after all he must keep fighting, not only is this all he's ever known to do to resolve anything, but he must hold on even tighter now to his sense of ego, which includes pretty much ignoring whatever others might have to say to him/about his actions. This is important to him, and while he's still the self-obsessed man everyone is used to, he'll be less guarded about what he thinks/knows/suspects than he was before.

Being now more aware of his own energy/power again (though this is by no means a constant thing yet) he'll probably relate the slow weakening to how he felt during the last few days of Individuation before he died, which means logically there must be something else going on - considering the Tower has stopped producing monsters, and so is now apparently sapping at the only real things left in it; the (cores of) Residents.

If anyone is making a concerted effort to find out what is going on, you'll bet he'll also be looking for the same so if anyone wants to do anything, lemme know!

Edit: Now if he could only get over his distrust of the hidden floor...
