Dax was created to be a character who was focused on efficiency and therefore would treat the characters in whatever way was most efficient to getting results. The intent was that the characters would resist him at every turn (we were sort of playing on the "players tend to be combatant toward NPCs" angle). When they didn't, though, that opened him up to getting attached to them because being polite and nice to them got the best results. Things snowballed from there!
