Movie personality, with a lot of history from the books that couldn't be squashed into nine hours (e.g. Thorongil). He comes at the canon point right before his coronation, so basically the Valar hates him and doesn't want him crowned and destroyed Middle Earth before that travesty can happen. Oops.
